They initially started out as metal and wood humanoid shells embodied with magics to emulate rudimentary artificial intelligences. But soon linked their minds together and now form a collective conciousness.
They were created by the Dwarves as laborers and tools of war. When they became sentient and began to question their masters, the Dwarves attempted to exterminate them. They won the resulting, and reduced the Dwarves to a race of nomads. They currently occupy Rannoch.
The history of their creation and evolution serves as a warning to the rest of the galaxy of the potential dangers of magical intelligence and to the legally enforced, systematic repression of magical intelligences throughout society.
